How to be a Good Party Hostess

by Elizabeth Norton

1. Consider your guests. Are you having a quiet dinner party or a raucous Sunday football event? Sometimes the only ice breaker you need is something in common and a few snacks. Or learning something new as a group, such as a craft is a great way to get to know each other.

2. Food can be a great meeting point. Buffet style and long tables full of bite size snacks invite lingering and conversation. Also, try to arrange seating into small groups of 3 or 4. This at least means a couple can sit together and 1 or 2 people or another couple can sit down and chat.

3. Themes. I love theme parties! They don’t have to be complicated…sports watching is a great example of a theme. Remind your guests to dress in team gear and go crazy with sports theme decorations. Don’t forget the face paint!
Theme ideas
-fondue party with French dress (berets, stripey shirts)
-black and white clothing and food too
-famous couples
-any holiday

4. Games. I think if you are going to play games, they need to be relatively easy and/or well known. Nothing’s worse than having to read pages of directions to get that new game going.

Classic Party Games
-Twister
-Bingo
-Card games
-Pictionary

Games to improvise with items on hand
-Who am I? Eac

h person is given the name of a famous actor (or sports hero, politician, cheesmaker, etc depending on party theme-we did famous couples at my bridal shower). They mingle, asking yes and no questions to get clues as to who they are. You cannot ask the same person twice!
-Pass the orange-everyone gets in a circle. Tuck an orange under the first person’s chin and pass it to the next person in the same manner. No hands allowed!
-Charades. All you need is a few topics written on slips of paper.
